Short term accommodation (STA) / Respite: Clinical justification example

Frequency or Level of Support Recommended

X days per quarter, X days per year

Clinical reasoning

X has been shown to be suffering from social isolation. X requires X days per quarter (X days per year) of respite support to engage with others and decrease his/her social isolation. This support will provide X with the opportunity to take breaks from his/her daily routine, participate in recreational activities, and experience a change in environment. By accessing respite support, X will have the necessary opportunities to enhance his/her social engagement and overall well-being.

Reasonable and necessary criteria

  • Reasonable and necessary: Respite would provide X with an opportunity to engage in meaningful occupations.

o Respite support is essential for X to take breaks from his/her daily routine, engage with others, and decrease social isolation. This support enhances his/her well-being, provides opportunities for recreation and leisure, and promotes social engagement.

o High scores in the WHODAS 2.0 domain Participation in Society – X scored X%, indicating his/her disabilities have a X functional impact on his/her ability to participate within society.

  • Value for money: The allocation of respite support optimises the utilisation of X's NDIS funding by providing necessary breaks and opportunities for recreation. This support reduces the risk of carer burnout, enhances X’'s overall quality of life, and promotes his/her overall well-being.

  • This accords with the participant’s NDIS goal:

Risks of not providing this support

Increased social isolation: Without respite support, X may experience heightened social isolation, limiting his/her opportunities for social engagement and reducing his/her overall well-being

Decreased emotional regulation: The absence of respite support may impact Xs ability to take breaks from his/her daily routine, potentially leading to increased stress, decreased emotional regulation, and a decline in his/her overall mental health and well-being.
